Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedure used to evaluate and treat conditions affecting the bile ducts, gallbladder, liver, and pancreas. At Gastro Center of Maryland, board-certified gastroenterologists perform ERCP using advanced endoscopic techniques to help diagnose and manage complex digestive and pancreatic conditions. Patients throughout the greater DMV area trust our team for expert, compassionate care.

What is ERCP?

ERCP is a minimally invasive procedure that combines endoscopy and X-ray imaging to examine the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts. During the procedure, a flexible endoscope is passed through the mouth, esophagus, and stomach into the small intestine. A contrast dye is then injected into the ducts, allowing detailed imaging to identify blockages, narrowing, stones, or other abnormalities.

What conditions can ERCP diagnose or treat?

ERCP is commonly used to diagnose and treat disorders of the biliary and pancreatic systems, including:

  • Gallstones in the bile ducts
  • Blocked or narrowed bile ducts
  • Pancreatic duct abnormalities
  • Bile duct leaks
  • Cholangitis (bile duct infection)
  • Pancreatitis
  • Tumors of the bile duct or pancreas
  • Jaundice related to bile duct obstruction

Why might I need an ERCP?

Your provider may recommend ERCP if imaging studies or symptoms suggest a problem with your bile ducts or pancreas. Common symptoms include abdominal pain, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), abnormal liver test results, recurrent pancreatitis, or unexplained digestive issues. ERCP allows physicians not only to identify the cause of these symptoms, but also to treat many conditions during the same procedure.

Depending on your diagnosis, ERCP may be used to remove gallstones, place stents to open blocked ducts, treat strictures, or collect tissue samples for further evaluation. Your gastroenterologist will carefully review your medical history, symptoms, and prior test results to determine if ERCP is the most appropriate option for your care.

What should I expect during the procedure?

ERCP is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under sedation to ensure comfort. The procedure usually takes between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on complexity. Afterward, patients are monitored during recovery and may return home the same day with post-procedure instructions provided by the care team.
