Biologic Therapy Q & A
What is a biologic?
Biologic medications target the immune system to decrease the inflammation that causes symptoms in inflammatory bowel disease. Biologics are used to achieve remission and maintain remission in ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Biologic medications are often infused through an IV into the body. This process not only helps the patient receive targeted amounts of medicine, but it also bypasses the digestive system which may be inflamed and therefore not able to absorb oral medications.
What can I expect from my biologic infusion?
To administer some biologic therapies, an intravenous catheter is inserted into the arm. The biologic is then introduced through the IV and given over a period of time, usually 30-120 minutes. The patient will remain in the office while the infusion is administered and for several minutes afterward to monitor for side effects. The patient can then return to their normal daily routine while the biologic medications work to decrease the inflammation. Some biologic therapies can be given subcutaneously by the nursing staff at Gastro Center of Maryland or by the patient at home.
If you suffer from ulcerative colitis or Crohn's Disease, and would like to explore biologic infusion treatments or an endoscopy procedure, make an appointment with Dr. Pia Prakash and Dr. Rudy Rai at the Gastro Center of Maryland for diagnosis and treatment.
